What is podiatry?

Podiatry is a modern word for Chiropody and it relates to the study, diagnosis and treatments of conditions of the feet and lover limbs.

Many of the conditions treated by Podiatrists in Oldham are external (such as in-growing/ fungal toenails, warts, corns and calluses). They also treat internal injuries of the foot (such as sprains, heel pains and fractures).

Conditions of the feet are often overlooked and our lower limbs neglected.

However, this can cause imbalances throughout the body because of the knock on effects on the ankles, knees and hips.

Podiatry is becoming increasingly important due to an ageing population and the significant strain we place on our feet in daily life.

When do I need to see a podiatrist?

If you have painful feet, don’t hesitate to visit us at Total Physio Oldham.

Often patients wait longer than they need to before visiting us. You may experience pain while walking, soreness in the toes, numbness or swelling. If you have any calluses, bunions, ingrown or fungal toenail please don’t delay. Visit us today!

Podiatry Treatments

After a detailed analysis, we can pinpoint any stress or imbalances which cause pain in the lower body. Then, we use a range of treatments to correct these areas, reliving the pain. Some techniques we use include:

  • Insoles to realign and cushion the foot
  • Manipulation- using massage and pressure techniques involving short, sharp joint thrust and muscle/tissue stretches.
  • A foot orthosis or brace to increase the efficiency of foot functions. This in turn affects the alignment of the rest of the body and improves general posture.
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises to overcome dysfunction.

What conditions can be treated with Podiatry?

  • Flat feet
  • Aching feet
  • Arthritis
  • Bunions
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Ankle, knee, hip pain
  • Shin splints
  • Sports injury
  • Achilles tendonitis … and much more.
