Our feet, ankles, lower limbs and back are our gateway to an active lifestyle but often the most neglected part of our bodies. We put a significant strain on our lower limbs; high levels of activity, our age, or just the demands of daily life can lead to a range of injuries and conditions.
When do I need to see a Podiatrist?
If you are experiencing foot pain related to activity, our Musculoskeletal (MSK) Podiatrists will be able to identify, diagnose and treat pain in the lower limbs. They are specialists in biomechanical conditions which may be preventing you living an active lifestyle and could be the cause of longer term problems.
What are biomechanical conditions?
Biomechanics analyses how your body behaves under stress and strain. We apply this knowledge to the feet to understand how they function and move. Poor functioning can have knock on effects for the rest of the body such as ankles, knees, hips and backs. Due to their position, the feet also have to compensate for poor function or posture higher up the body which can manifest itself as pain and cause strains or injuries.
A detailed biomechanical examination attempts to pinpoint these imbalances within your body and correct them by mechanical means. We use techniques such as:
- The use of insoles to realign and cushion the foot.
- A foot orthosis to increase the efficiency with which the foot functions, affecting the rest of the body and helping to improve general posture.
- Manipulation, involving short, sharp joint thrusts, muscle and tissue stretches and pressure and massage techniques.
- Stretching and strengthening exercises to overcome dysfunction.
